How can i make it any clearer? Merc stern drive MC or also know as Mercruiser #1 and a R/MR/Alpha One, Will the two interchange? The water pump impellers are the same, gear ratio same, etc....

As I understand, a mercruiser MR and #1 are the same drive. The will interchange with an alpha 1 no problem I've done it before. From what I have been told, the alpha 1 has a stronger gearset ( ie... capable of more HP) but uses the same housings. I could be wrong on the stronger part, but as long as it is gen 1 it will interchange.

Thanks all, that was what i was hoping, So now i have two good stern drives that will fit my boat.

Yeah now that I think about it, I believe someone told me I could swap out my old (1966 Merc #1) previous drive for anything up to and including an Alpha 1 drive. I was amazed that I could still buy a raw pump for it.

Ayuh,...... Never set it,....
I've only had to sign in once or twice since the last software change around here,+ just used the emailed code...
This is a New 'puter,.. My old 1 with all my Stuff should be coming home Monday......

Back to Topic,....

The Merc drives changed very little from the 60s thru the very early 80s.....
And,...
Drive for Drive, they swap out with each other, Right up to the Gen.IIs....
Even the Gen.IIs have Alot of common parts with the earlier drives,... Some gears,+ bearings and such.....
They won't swap Drive for Drive because of the change the the Shifting Linkages.........
Other than That,........ They Would......
