This may sound like an inane question, but i joined this forum to ask questions like this when my brain does not seem to be working at its best. Does anyone know of a thread on here that discusses the swap i am doing? I went thru pages of posts and seen many for other sizes of motors and other years but did not see one for this.
All i know is the base gaskets are the same part number ( i asked that in a thread a few days ago and someone told me that then i went to the marineengine site and looked them up)
I have went and purchased an inch pound torque wrench because the head i got was seized and after i got it unseized, i pulled the head to check the cyl walls.
I am not looking for a detailed tutorial or anything just some helpful hints like Dont forget to do this before you put that part on that etc.
Also what type of gasket guck should i use on the bottom gaskets - does aircraft type form a gasket do the trick?
Would appreciate any tips you folks can give me so i do not end up taking this thing apart and putting it together several times and also any info on complications i may run into doing this.

Off the top of my head, the only thing significantly different on the short blocks would be the 1981 has the vertical shift lockout bar on the starboard side, while the '88 does not. I can't recall if the boss is there for it or not on the '88. If it is, you might be able to just drill and tap it.

dunno if this matters or not but the 81 was longshaft and the 88 the other reg length shaft - out working on it and in for a snack and some ibupropen LOL 81 had a manual choke option and 88 did not so i guess i am gonna have a multi colour motor LOL ( hoping to swap carb and all electronics so it works with the wiring on my boat)
