I have a 86 Evinrude with VRO and was wondering what I would have to do to the oiling system to put on a 97 Evinrude 50hp. I read that they use different pumps? Any help would be great.

Schweg2,The 1986 40 hp VRO pump assy. functions in the same way that the later 1997 VRO pump functions with the exception of the alarm harness. The 86' has a three wire harness and the 97' has a four wire. The 86 is set up for a no oil warning alarm and the 97' for a no oil and a fuel restriction alarm.Fuel and oil wise they work the same.
Is the 97' 50 hp currently equipped with a VRO that you want to change out or are you trying to restore it back to VRO?

The 50hp Evinrude I was going to buy comes with nothing so I was going to use the VRO on the boat if I can do that? Do I need a new wiring harness?
Thanks for replying.

Hi Schweg2, If I understand, you want to bolt on a 1997 Evinrude 50 to replace a 1986 40 you had on the boat.
If this is true, the oil tank on the boat will function the same as your old unit except for the warning system. The other difference will be the wiring hook up from the boat to the engine. The 97 will be what is called 'system check'.
Visit your local Evinrude dealer to get an adaptor harness to connect your boat wiring to the engine. They should be able to answer all your questions.

I personally would not put the older 86' VRO system on the newer motor.I'd leave it alone. Most people are defeating the older systems and mixing 50:1. That's just my opinion.

The motor should come with the VRO pump system except for the remote tank. The remote tank sensor was change, and the 86 tank sensor, may not be correct for the 97 motor, dealer should verify this. What ever you do , you should verify the alarm system is working, should have three functions overheat, no oil being pumped, low oil in tank. I would also remove the starter and check the VRO pump pulse hose and clamps.

Thanks for all the info. What would I have to do to eliminate the vro and premix the fuel. Is there an alarm for overheating?
