swapping a johnny lower unit

can i replace the lower unit on a 1969 johnny 6 hp with a 1973 jonny 9 1/2 hp lower unit?

I have'nt checked the parts manual, but the drive shafts would be different. Whats wrong with your 6 HP gearcase?

the skeg is broken off the 6 hp.

Grind off what's left...take a 5/16" piece of alum. sheet, cut a new fin and have it welded on.<br />Actually, 1/4" or even 3/16" would work on that small of motor (Engine....motor is electric).

thanks walleyehed and R.johnson. maybe i can TIG it. why is that? ford motor co., outboard motor, motorboat.. very true a motor is electric, a engine is internal combustion.. just thought i could pick up a cheap 9 1/2 hp lower and put it on if they were interchangable. great little engine, i just want to hang on to it, dont know why. gotta 2000 johnny 9.9, just like the little bugger.

What amp (Max) is your TIG??? 3/16" you can most likely do with a TIG, it may take a multiple pass on both sides though. I'm sure you know, but use a 100% Tungston tip for alum....

its a lincoln 355 square wave.a good friend who rides harleys with the wife and myself is the owner. lots of bell's and whistles, and a ton of money for that machine. he tig's all of the motorcycle frames he builds. i have used it many times on steel. and aluminum a few times also.. i will groove the joint and clean it good.i should be OK with the casting. 100% tungsten 3/32 electrode 140 amps or so.with the tungsten a little blunted like a crayon for the aluminum.tig is a slow process, but it makes beautiful strong beads. i just have a ac/dc machine, and use it for 95% of my projects..
