I want to make a long shaft out of a short that runs but has a crack in a housing and a long that has been picked up art for parts. Would it be best to swap heads or fix the crack somehow and swap lower units? Any help would be appreciated thank you.

So now I found a blown head gasket and water in the cylinders. I guess I can try to clean it up somehow?

That hole would normally be covered by the recoil starter.--------That has a gasket to seal that up.

By God your right lol I almost was going to tear the whole thing apart lol. Now i have leaks in here

The bolts went in kind of rough and one bolt is stripped so I'll need a longer one.
Since I reused all of the old gaskets (including a sketchy fuel filter gasket) I can run for a bit but she dies out. Going to try to figure this gasket situation without spending a ton.

Quick update.
My main problems care the recoil gasket (discontinued)
Lack of fuel flow to cylinders
Water coming out of the midsection
Untested lower unit/seals

Going to grab a compression tester tomorrow just so I know what I'm dealing with there
Prolly grab a diy gasket sheet and some sealer while I'm there as well as new fuel line and hose clamps (seems they hold better as long as I don't overtighten)

Thanks for the responses they saved me a TON of trouble. I've learned so much from this forum and am truly grateful.

What would be a good material to make a diy fuel filter gasket from?

Oh, and I forgot to ask. Since I swapped the magneto but didn't move anything there shouldn't be an issue with it should there?

So I check the compression today and it was 58/57. I couldn't get full pulls because the pull cord got shredded by the metal guide. I don't think it's installed right but didn't have time to figure out how to swap the one from the other motor.
I bought the greenish see through fuel line to see the flow of fuel is good.
If I need to use that black heavy duty stuff I'll get it later.
Put some sealer around the recoil housing and fuel pump gasket. I'll have to order a few once I figure out what all I need to order.(I'm guessing lower end seals will be needed)

Can't figure out this eyelet for the pull cord.it looks like the whole case would have to come apart but it can't be that much work just to replace an eyelet???

Yes you have to seperate the casing somewhat to install that rope guide.----Not really that hard if you are doing it the SECOND time.

Yea, I didn't see the bolt at the bottom. Think I may need to get some sleep lol. Replaced that guide and the cord this morning. I tried to start her up but was getting bubbles from the fuel pump to the carb. I tightened the hose clamp too much and punctured the line.
Dropped the gasket into the abyss and can't fish it out lol. Turning into a bit of a circus but I'll just get a new one anyways. Might clean out the fuel pump and carb tomorrow too.
Thanks for the help.

Got the new fuel filter gasket. Ran pretty good for a bit and I should have just let it idle but I revved her up and she sounded great. For about 30 seconds then died out lol. Started her up again and the same thing. Ball on the fuel hose goes a bit flat and tgere are ait bubbles from fuel filter to the carb. Guessing that's the next issue to tackle. Going to clean the fuel ggilter and see what that does. Picked up about 6 ft of good black solid fuel line at the auction for $2 so I'll be putting that on later.
Disconnected the fuel filter and manually pumped some gas and it flows well from the tank.

Ran into a new problem. The carb on the '70 isn't the same as the '73. Would I be able to make this work somehow? What's stopping me is I'd like to just use the whole assembly from the '70 but it has a fuel connection where the '73 does not. If I can't use the whole assembly could I use just the carb assembly from the '70 and use it with the '73 intake? This is turning into a mess :(
