Re: Swapping carbs from rochester to holley

Thanks for the guys that actually answered the simple question with a simple answer. I may have jumped the gun and thought this forum was a great tool but it appears to be full of opnionated assuming people that are just typing in crap in an attempt to boost your post count.
If you dont think a 4.3L is capable of make 300hp I dont know what to tell you. Its not that hard with the right combination and my background.

Ayuh,... I'd still Love to see the dyno sheet showing it'll make 300hp, at rpms that are Usable in a boat....

Btw,... If you don't like Opinions,...
I guess you just Don't understand how forums work either....

I have no doubt that it's possible to make 400hp from the 4.3l, but it may not be all that practical in a boat.

In a car you have a gearbox so you can work the ratios for the road speed and stay in the powerband... Not so in a boat. The optimum engine for a boat has a very flat torque curve, not a peaky one like you would see in a street racer.

The other thing is the Holley. Again not a good choice in a boat... Mercruiser did use them, but dropped them for a few reasons, one of which is ... they cause fires! and in a boat that's a really bad thing. Plenty of 4 bbl options other than a Holley... Rochester, Weber, Carter, Edlebrock... Hey, I'd even put a Stromberg before a Holley.

Don't take this a criticism of your work, just a few points you may not realize....

Chris..........

Gentlemen, I have a 21ft. Hammond Mark 1 Challenger with a Mercruiser 260 GM 350cu.inch V8 (1982 ? 1986) 5.7 ltr.
I had the engine rebuilt about a year ago. It is fitted with a 4 Barrel Holley and my mechanic has suggested the Carb is now suffering from terminal fuel dyslexia. Long story short it needs replacing and I would welcome all opinions whether to replace it with a Rochester or Weber or other. I see little point in another Holley in that this is a pleasure boat and whilst it goes like ka ka off a shovel (Brit expression) I see little point in the additional price of a Holley and especially in the light of a previous posters comments re Holleys catching fire.

I would be eternally grateful for your wise counsel. Many thanks, George

You shouldn't be replying to threads that have been dead for over 2 years. If you have a question that hasn't been answered by using the search function to look through the old posts, then post a new thread with your topic. In any case, most would recommend the Edelbrock 1409 for your application. Pretty much as plug-n-play as it gets.

You're right of course and in my unbridled enthusiasm I did not look at the date of the thread. Shall repost as a new topic and thanks for your recommendation.
