Don't everybody laugh at once, but here's a crazy question. Is it possible to take a 5.0L with an OMC Cobra outdrive out of a 89 bayliner and replace it with a 3.0L mercruiser and an Alpha I outdrive. I ask because I can buy the Bayliner cheap(bad motor, good outdrive). I have an 87 Mark Twain(good 3.0L, good outdrive, bad hull). I thought about swapping the two. Or will the OMC Cobra outdrive work on the 3.0L mercruiser.

Is it possible

Ayuh,.... Anything is Possible..... But...
As noted by Bubba,...
EVERYTHING that's OMC has to Go, to be replaced with EVERYTHING for the Mercruiser....

Or will the OMC Cobra outdrive work on the 3.0L mercruiser.

No....

Eagh... a bayliner isn't usually that good of hull to warrant that kind of work.

That being said you didn't list the size of the boat... but if it originally had a 5.0 it's certainly going to be a dog with a 3.0

agreed, however, i'm finishin up doing the opposite. went from 4cyl omc cobra to a 5.7l merc in a bayliner, for power reasons. if you already have the 5.0l, i'd just replace the motor. not hard, may be less of a headache than trying to dispose of donor boat when you're done with it.

Re: swapping engines and outdrives

The 5.0L Bayliner is a 21ft. cuddy. My 3.0L Mark Twain is a 19ft bow rider. According to NADA the Bayliner is about 300lbs heavier, which is surprising since it's a 5.0L and 2ft longer. I guess that's why JustJason say's the bayliner hull is not all that great. Anyway I knew I would be loosing alot of power, just trying to keep some money, it's hard to come by these days. Thank for all the help.

a 3.0 is going to be a dog in a 21... might want to bring some roman oarsmen along for that ride.
