I have a 1979 Carver 2357. With a 228 mercruiser GM 305. I found a OMC GM 350. The dip stick on my Mercruiser is on the port side, the OMC, the dip stick is on the starboard side. Will My Mallory electronic dist. work with the OMC. What will and will not work?

Re: Swapping engines. Need help

I'm doing a similar swap with an OMC 305 to 350. The main difference has to do with the age of the small block engines. If the replacement engine is newer than about 1985 the crankshaft will be different and therefore the drive coupler from your old engine won't work. The rest of the stuff should swap from one to the other including the distributor.

Thanks for the reply. I will check the serial #. I was told it was the same age.

Most V8 chevy distributers are interchangeable..... deck height and more importantly dont forget about gears that are compatable if using a roller cam! :)
