I hope one you RKI's can provide a little help with the following:
I have a 1976 Johnson 70hp, Model 70EL76D, which has a toasted lower unit...long run, no oil, just gear teeth and metal shavings. The motor runs great, never had a problem, but it no longer pushes the boat. I have just picked up an Evinrude, Model 70473M, same horsepower.
Can I swap out these lower units with no problems? Both lowers have been off recently, and the four bolts are clean stainless steel. Ostensibly, both lowers had new water pumps pump on "last year".
Just as note, the Evinrude was available because it had "backfired", and literally blew a hole in the intake manifold between the carbs and the reed valves. I have never seen anything quite like that.
