I am wanting to swap out my engine on my 21 foot pontoon.. Right now it has only a 40hp omc on it.. A buddy of mine a a 75 hp Mercury that I wanna buy from him and put on there.. Now the questions.. Can I use my control box that is on the boat now?? It is the one for the omc.. I thought maybe that it could be hard wired.. The mercury is NOT oil injected.. My engine is and I would like to keep it that way.. Can I maybe put a TEE in the fuel line and hook up the oil injector like that?? Thanks in advance for you inputs..

Hi there!
I think your in the wrong forum, but..
To answer both your questions, no.
You'll need a merc box, and premixing is not that hard.

No means the controls really can't be switched without a huge effort. The cable ends are wrong, the wiring isn't 1:1, etc.

Hell no means that the remote oil tank isn't an oil injector; the fuel pump on the OMC motor has a precision oil pump that draws the oil from the remote tank and mixes it with the gas at the proper ratio.

Ok thats better... All makes sence now with the oil issue.. But on the other hand the engine should be able to be hooked up to the omc controler.. I will be takeing it to a boat repair shop to have this done.. Its just like takeing a Ford and putting a chevy engine in it.. No it wont just set in there and hook right up but it can be done.. I have done it myself.. I dont know a hole lot about outboard engine's or I would do it myself.. The oil isnt really a issue I can premix it myself just thought that it would be nice to just put gas in the tanks an not worry witht he oil.. Anyway thanks for the input..

Save your money and install a Mercury control box. At $80/$90 bucks an hour the cost to convert the OMC box to work with the Merc engine will easily eat up the cost of the box and you will have a cobble-job at best. E-bay genrally has a bunch of boxes for virtually any motor on the planet.

I have the control box.. The problem is that this is going on a pontoon boat and the controller is onthe dash (top mount) the the merk controller is a side mount.. That is the hole reason of wanting to use the omc controller

Re: Swapping OMC to a Mercury

You have an OMC wiring and tilt & trim harness that needs to be converted to match the Mercury wiring. You also need new cables or conversion ends to match the Mercury. This is not done for free so where is the savings? It doesn't matter whether you have a binnacle mount or side mount. You can find what you really need on E-bay, have stuff that matches, and be able to do it yourself for less money. Just because you can make the control cables fit the engine and controller, you have no guarantee that the amount of throw on the controller is enough to properly operate the Merc throttle and shift linkage. There is no "throw adjustment". That's why we are suggesting you use the proper box.
