Swapping short shaft for long shaft??

I have an 85 VRO50 Johnson with a long shaft and I am about to obtain an 86 VRO50 Johnson with a short shaft. The 85 has a fffd up piston but I want to know can I use it's long shaft on the working 86? Is it just a matter of swapping them out?

Disregard, the motor I was looking into has a long shaft, so all is well in the saltwater boating world today.
