I have a Fuso 320 sounder in my boat at the moment and recently found on the bank of the river a transducer from a Hummingbird that had presumably been broken off a boat and drifted ashore. At present im also looking getting a little car topper dingy and was wondering if I can connect the hummingbird transducer to the fuso sounder for use in the dinghy?
Specs for the fuso are frequency: 200 kHz, Output Power: 80 Watts effective (640 peak to peak). I dont know any specs for the hummingbird transducer though.

Any thoughts on if this will be possible - or if I might fry my sounder in the process?

Cheers
Troy

Re: swapping transducer

Troy – sorry, I missed your original posting. I looked at Airmar’s web site for the x-reference of transducers. Didn’t see your sounder listed. You can look here to see if the models are similar:

http://www.airmar.com/marine/enduser/enduser_index.html

Unless you just want a project, it might not be worth messing with the found transducer since you don’t know if it is functional. They are not really expensive. You can buy one for your sounder…if you can find a reference for it.

Edit: Is Fuso Ind. products Italian? German?

Re: swapping transducer

Hmmmm.. "not really expensive"...the only time I tried to buy a replacement transducer, I found that the transducer cost was almost as much as a base-line model of the depth finder itself. i.e $50.00 for the transducer and $69.99 for a whole new unit. I bought the new unit and it worked better anyhow. RichG

Re: swapping transducer

Richg99 - what are you saying? You got a new ff head for $20? :D

What I meant was that $50 transducer may be the same critter that drives a $1500 ff head. $50 in marine electronics doesn't even count...but put up against a $70 ff, yep, better to just replace the whole thing. ;)

The references I can find online to Fuso sounders are for models that are not cheap. Overall, can't find much about them at all.

Here’s the other thing… If the impedance between the head and the transducer on the TX and RX lines are mismatched, either the ‘ducer will fail or the head can be permanently damaged. If I could find Fuso listed in Airmar’s x-ref of ‘ducers I wouldn’t worry about it. But not seeing it there and not being able to find much online, I’d say DON’T hook ‘em up together, pending more info.

Re: swapping transducer

Hi there folks - sorry for not getting back sooner (long weekend here...)

As best as I can figure, Fuso is Fuso Electronics Inc, from Osaka Japan. In Australia, they were marketed through GME Electrophone (Greenwich Marine Electronics). It sounds like they arent too common in the rest of the world.

18rabbit - thanks for the crossreference chart. it sounds like that in all, it may not be worth playing around with the combination that I have. It may be best just to buy a cheap second sounder - wife permitting (you know how it is...) ;)

I was just trying to do it on the cheap, but as they say, often the cheapest way turns out to be the most expensive....

Cheers
T
