Swapping Volvo 305 with 350. Any important parts to swap with motor out?

Hello All. I have finally found myself a good motor to replace the 1992 500B (305 Volvo) that has a cracked block. Its unfortunate, because the 500B runs perfect, I just cannot get the crack to seal. The replacement motor is a Volvo Penta 350 rebuilt in 2007 with 100 hrs, 1986 or 1987, that is being removed from a cruiser boat. Not sure exactly the year since i am going to look, hear it run and buy it in about an hour. I currently have a 1992 Volvo 500B with a DP-C outdrive, and am swapping in a volvo 350.

When i have the old motor out, is there anything i should replace or inspect. Right now, everything runs great, no weird noises or anything in the outdrive. I am going to be using my new manifolds off the 305, my bellhousing, and new starter, and the "new" motor comes with everything else.

Thanks for your input.

trev i forget where i read a old post in crack repairs but had to do with drill a small hole at each end of crack then drilling hole in crack then thread it and install pipe plugs then grind those smooth and did several along and or top of edges to totally fix crack then after had them all match to ground smooth then repainted to match block. wish i could recall it but seemed logical..maybe the member that did that post will read this ???

I went and looked at the motor. Not the prettiest thing in the world, but thats not the important thing. I am going to go back next sunday to hear it run and do a compression check, and if i like what i hear he is going to pull it from the boat and put in the back of my truck.

I did find that casting number on the back of the motor:

10066036...350...........2 or 4...Target Master/Goodwrench, 2-piece
seal, "Hecho en Mexico"

Does anyone know anything about this motor? It looks like it is a crate motor from Mexico. It is a 1988. The motor was rebuilt by Monmouth Marine in New Jersey in 2007. Can anyone tell me if this is a good block or not? The guy is asking $650 for the motor all accessories, including a new closed water cooling system that was installed on the motor when it was redone in 2007.

Randy:

There is a product called Thread n Stitch that i looked at. My crack is not your normal crack. The freeze kind of bent the bottom of the crack out, and i'm scared to try and bend it back in, as i heard that cast does not like to be bent. Right now i have JB Weld holding it, and it does an ok job, but i cannot get it to "grab" the block well enough. I feel replacing the motor is the best thing to do at this point. Especially for $650. Thanks for the info though.

Your big problem is if the block cracked internally or not. If it cracked that bad outside, I can't imagine the block not cracking internally where is can't be repaired.
Pull the intake manifold off and look for cracks in the lifter galley. I'm sure you will find them.

Hi don

I think you guys are mistaking my post. I am removing my motor that has the crack and installing a "new" to me 350. I am just wondering if therenis anything that I should replace when I remove the old motor and install the new one. currently, everything sounds and runs great outdrive wise. Just don't know much about the Volvo systems, and have never had one out of the boat yet.

Right now, my old motor that is in the boat actually runs like a top. I have put 10 hrs on it this year. I just and sick of trying to seal the block from the leaking externally, so that is why I am installing a new 350. It is kind of a shame, cause the 500b runs so good. I did not crack the block by then way. I bought it like that knowing there was a crack and that i would replace the motor when finances aloud.
