Swim Platform - which way to go?

Ok guys, I need some advice. My swim platform has rotted in a few areas. It is teak. A previous owner painted it and fixed some rot using PINE! (that must be why he painted it). Well, the paint must have trapped moisture and caused more rot. I stripped off some of the paint and stopped once I found more rot.

Here are my options and I want to know what you'd do:

1) Forget the platform and just use a removable ladder off the side

2) Strip the rest of the paint, repair with teak and leave natural (may not look too good)

3) Rebuild it from scratch out of teak using the old one as a model

4) Make it out of fir, fiberglass and gelcoat it

The platform measures 86" tapering to 82" long

It is 19" wide tapering to 17" (I want it 6" wider at least at the center)

The main pieces are about 2-5/8ths" wide and the gaps are about 1-1/8" They are straight pieces that run the length of the platform. 1-1/8th" pieces are used between them where the larger support pieces are underneath.

Construction is simple - there are 5" - 6" wide pieces on the bottom perpendicular to the length of the platform everywhere you see no gaps in the platform.

What would you do?

Here are pics of the transom and platform

Re: Swim Platform - which way to go?

Ralph,

I just typed that in quick yesterday, after doing a quick search. Only cause I've seen some good prices on swimplatforms lately. Some are not teak either, I forget the other mat'l, composite something or another maybe. But brand new teak for $400, sure you can make one a little cheaper, if you got the time, and you KNOW you're not going to scrap any lumber....

I don't like that ebay one, as much as I'd like a solid one, I believe all the little cutouts in the standard type are so when wakes and/or following seas hit you the brackets don't take as much of a strain. Good Luck!

I would stick with the teak. It looks very classy. With proper care it will look great for 20 years or more.

That's a good point Mike. It also drains quickly as the boat climbs out of the hole...

I bought a SS removable ladder and if that works I may forget the platform for a while - with twin 350s and a 7' beam the stern is already incredibly heavy... The other problem is the thru-hull. I'm not sure what 180 degree dirty water constantly discharging on expensive teak will do to it (that may be another reason the platform got painted)
