Switch a Motor Over Question

Does anyone know if a 1979 mercury 115hp direct 6 outboard has any adapter that can use a Sea Ray 89 160 model with a mariner 100hp org. sea ray motor controls on it. Or do I basically have to take the old wire harness and not be able to use any of the gauges on the Sea Ray? As you all can tell I am a green thumb on this. Any and all help would greatly be appreciated

Re: Switch a Motor Over Question

You want to install a '79 Merc on a boat that had an '89 SeaRay outboard? If so, the throttle and shift cables will work, but the wiring harness is different. It can be spliced, hoowever.

Re: Switch a Motor Over Question

Due you know were I can get the wiring diagram for the mercontrol and the 89 Sea Ray outboard. The merc is a 1974 model according to the serial#
the Sea Ray was a mariner engine.
One thing I noticed is the mercontrol has the cold start throttle, the key, choke and gear shift with the tilt trim on the dash board.

Sea Ray has the Key/Choke on the dash with the trim/gear shift on the side mount control. I do not see were the cold start throttle lever control is but it has 2 cables running to the back ?

could really use a wiring diagram site for the sea ray and the merc controls if anyone knows of a site.
Thank you in advance.

Re: Switch a Motor Over Question

The wiring diagrams for both motors are available in the service manual. You can order them from right here on iboats.

The Mariner motor was made by Mercury so you may find that the controls are interchangeable. Do the wiring harnesses have the same plug connection at the motor?

Others may chime in with more specific details.

Re: Switch a Motor Over Question

Look for the wiring diaghrams on the maxrules.com web site. That '74 Merc will have a distributor and battery ignition. The ign key needs to supply +12VDC to the white wire.

The cross connects from old motor to new motor control box are:

Tach Signal - Brown to grey
Accessory power - White to Purple
Ignition Killer - orange to Black/yellow
Choke - Grey to Yellow/black
Starter Solenoid - yellow to yellow/red
Ground - Black to Black
+12V power - Red to red
