I am going to order a switchbox for my 79' 80hp 4cyl. Iboats has three choices: CDI ,Mallory, or Sierra . Looking to save money on this , but don't want to buy a cheap on if it wont hold up. Which one is the better buy? S/N # 5704744 , Thanx

CDI...they have a free troubleshooting guide in my sig below..also a link to a cheap dva adapter, so you can be sure your problem is your switch box..CDI recommends replacing both switch boxes at the same time if you have 2.

I used to be a CDI guy but from what I hear and experienced I am going back to Sierra as the warranty is better and they will pay you to replace it if it fails (if your a dealer)....

Re: Switch box

Mallory's are made in Germany and they can be bought on line for a little over $100...Mercury is crazy what they want....CDI is over rated..Ask the shops what they use as CDI doesn't cover the come back.....

Re: Switch box

I prefer CDI because 1) I am not a dealer, so the labor cost will not be covered by anyone, 2) I have not had any warranty issues so far and I have replaced parts on a number of motors. (once I thought I had a bad powerpack, I sent it back and they sent me a new one, no questions asked, it turned out I had a bad timer base.) 3) CDI has provided the best customer service in my opinion, not only is their web site extremely informative and includes a comprehensive free troubleshooting guide, but they will answer your e-mails and phone calls. I had a issue once and they spent over an hour on the phone with me. .. The parts seem to be as good or better than any of the others and are competitively priced. I buy my parts off boatfix.
