If anyone has read an earlier thread that I've done earlier, I've completed the dreaded shift cable replacement on an 82 omc full mechanic unit. While the swap was indepth, and am very pleased to have completed it myself, and have learned that nothing is complex once you understand how it works. Not only was it completed, it actually worked better than I had hoped, almost like its a new boat. However I've got a couple of questions in regards to setting up the top cable adjustment on the shift converter inside the boat.
There are two microswitches. One I know, is wedged on the inner arm that rotates with the converter, the ESA. I understand its purpose, how it works and what it is there for. However I have a second on the outmore perimiter of the converter that also rotates (sorry no pictures). It has two black wires running to it. There is also two adjustable plastic ramps, presumibly for foward and reverse, since they are about that distance apart, that would activate this black switch. While the switch is not adjustible, the plastic ramps are. However I cannot figure out what its for. Is it part of the ESA system somehow as well? Activating the switch while driving seems to have no affect, while under throttle or at idle (manual activation, such as a guy with the screwdriver sitting in the back trying to get thrown overboard). What is this switch, and what does it do? Finally, however is it to be properly adjusted and set up? Thanks.
