how much work would this take and what parts would i need to replace while i am in there? i am fairly handy with a full set of normal tools but have never tried messing with a lower unit.

long story short, i have a 1985 johnson 120 with a v6 long leg on one boat that is unpowered, and a chance to swap a 1990 johnson 200 with an xl leg from another boat that is overpowered. the 120 v6 leg has a different pinion and cannot handle the 200 power.

Gee, I do not understand what you are trying to do. There are some differences in the gearcase parts. For example, the 200 has a 2 piece driveshaft, the 120 does not.

you need to find motors that share the same components, but maybe be different HPs...you cant just change anything motor part for another. What you are asking is like trying to put a 1967 camaro fender on a 1980 Malibu. they wont fit, they were never designed to fit and you cant make them fit!! now there are V6 motors of various HP that may interchange over several years... you need to find those motors.. I didn't think they made a 120 HP V6..... but I do know that some V4 motors had heavy duty lower units that also fit some V6 motors.... I don't know if that's the case with your motors....there is a sticky with Lower Unit interchangability possibilities listed above or here: http://forums.iboats.com/johnson-evinrude-outboards/lower-unit-interchange-chart-359907.html bob

The 120 is a different gear ratio than the V6 even through they use same housings.
