Switching motors looking to use same controls

hello everyone this is my first time posting hopefully I don't sound so green I had a 1990 90hp v4 johnson outboard on my pontoon with omc controls and this motor is 8 pins im replaceing the 90hp with a 1985 50hp Johnson that is 7 pins and before I connect to the controls I wondering if this will affect the 50 hp any info would be appreciated thanks

If your control has a big red plug it will work on a motor with a big red plug on the harness.

yep, the red plug. Also, why are you downgrading motors?

Well the 90 hp needed the carbs rebuilt because they were leaking gas and after rebuilding them I’m sitting there watching the motor running and noticed water leaking under the port side head then pulled heads and replaced gaskets but still leaking and leaking in lower piston so I assumed the power head is cracked and my buddy gave me the 50hp so hopefully it’s a easy replacement the 90 still runs good just low compression

Just an update Hooked up the 1985 Johnson 50hp and no problem to the 1990 OMc controls perfect swap no issues
