Switching over from Mercury to Johnson OB.

I'm getting rid of a 1977 Mercury 88hp OB and putting in a 1990 Johnson 88hp. I have a teleflex safe-T mechanical rotary helm steering system. Will I need to change the steering cable?<br />thanks,<br />Chris

Hi Chrisross, The teleflex helm may be usable, you may have to change the cable, depending on the way it was connected to your old motor. If on your old motor, the cable went thru the tilt tube of the motor and had a link arm connected to it, the existing cable should fit.

The helm isn't a big deal but the transom is. I don't believe OMC transom brackets line up with Mercs. The pattern is definitely different. I usually swap engines of the same manufacturer and never have a hitch. I don't think there's a big difference between OMC or Merc. IMHO.
