Switching to Synthetic

There seem to be a lot of opinions or wive's tales about oils and which is better. They range from Pennzoil is 'yellow death' to 'only use the mfg recommended' etc etc...I've been using walmart supertech and have had no problems in my 93 J150GLETR, at least that I know of. I use seafoam and stabil in my fuel and pre-mix (vro removed).

I am considering a switch to synthetic just to cut down smoke a bit. Are there any problems with switching over after running petrol based for years? If not, what is a good synthetic or semi-synthetic. XD50 or 100 is hard to find in my area and the price is a bit steep compared to what I've been paying. Any input on this?

thanks in advance!

I use the cheapest oil I can find,I dont pay extra just for a name.Seafoam to me is useless take care of any engine and it wont need over publilized snake oils,Now Stabil is worth its money, it does what its meant to do.Synthetics ? If they did something more than less smoke, I may try them until then or we run out of oil they will stay on the stores shelves, for me anyway.

I, too, am a long time SuperTech user. While I agree that a full synthetic will make less smoke, stink, pollution and carbon deposits I just don't want to pay that much extra for it.

Were I to decide to use a synthetic I would use any TC-W3 rated synthetic available. Pennsoil full syn comes to mind. If you drink it it might be yellow death; otherwise the gossip is without merit.

Re: Switching to Synthetic

I buy the Penzoil Full Synthetic at Wal-Mart. Less smoke, less oil slick on the water, and less dirty remarks and stares at the launch ramp. Other than that, I see no difference. Costs more than Super Tech, but less than some others.

Completely unrelated, but the shop manual for my Dodge truck says if towing, use synthetic oil in the rear end.

Re: Switching to Synthetic

Thanks guys...So no issues with switching to synthetic after using regular for years? I just don't want any problems with seals, gaskets, etc.

What are your thoughts on a blended synthetic, or do you not really gain the advantage unless you go full syn? Again, just would like a little less smoke since the kids and wife spend some time in the bass boat with me.

No problem with switching. Or mixing, which the blend is. Try the various brands and see which impresses you.
