I,m taking my outdrive off for first time to grease and check joints. I have the shift cable off and the six nuts off but it will not come loose at all. It is a 97 and I have no idea if it has ever been removed. Previous owner said it sat in the lake every summer.(no lift). Any ideas?

No reason to take the shift cable off...unless that is specific to the SX..
Now you will need the measurements from the OMC service manual to correct that problem.Might as well replace the lower cable at this point.
I assume you have taken off the nuts on the lower and pulled the trim rams off the shaft.
Controls shifted into forward?

If all of that is done then the shaft is rusted to the coupler..
Keep yanking on it.
It should be removed every year,U-joints greased and the shaft splines greased and engine alignment checked.

Gary, you do have to disconnect the shift cable and remove the nuts and cable end when pulling the drive on a SX/DPS Volvo drive.

Assuming you also removed the pin for the trim cylinders, you may have corrosion or rust holding it on.
If, when the drive is all the way down, trim cylinders off and the 6 nuts off the drive, you can usually lift up a ways and drop it and the impact will usually get them moving with just a little corrosion. I couldn't imagine it beeing to much just being in fresh water, but after setting in the water for 12 years with no maintenance, you might consisider taking it to a VP dealer the first time to get it pulled and things inspected.

You also might want to prepare yourself for some expense. Chances are you are going to be replacing those u-joints and gimble bearing.
12 years without maintenance? Wow.
