SX Drive Prop replacement issues pics inside

I ordered a Solas RBX prop from Iboats however I can not get it to mate with the drive correctly. My old prop slides on and off the prop shaft with ease and no need to force. The new one I can not get all the way on. I don't want to force anything (i.e mallet) because I don't think it should need that.

Also should this thrust washer come off before the one in the solas hub kit goes on? I tried to pry it off gently but it would not budge, however I did not put much pressure on it in fear of messing something up. I'm thinking it's best to pick up a pulley puller and use that if this is indeed supposed to come off.

This is with both on which I do not think is correct.

I did some test fitting with the new prop and hub kit, and I found that it was difficult to get it down the prop shaft I could only get it within about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch being all the way on, not even far enough to come in contact with the original thrust washer. Does it just need to be tapped home with a mallet and 2x4 across the prop?

Here are the vitals:

Drive: 2004 SX-M1
Prod# 3868891
Serial# 4202100073
Volvo Prop# 3850302

New Prop is Solas RBX 9513-143-19, and the Hub kit is RBX-105

I've called it quits for tonight but would like to complete this tomorrow after work. What do you guys think?

You never use two thrust washers. Just use a couple of screw drives to pop the old one off. They do get corroded on if they were never greased.

Thanks Don, also thanks for moving the thread, I debated which section to post it in. In your experience putting a screwdriver across the back on top and bottom and givin'er should set it free?

What about getting the prop all the way down the shaft to meet the hub does it need to be tapped home with a mallet? My concern with doing that is it could get stuck on.

Hello - I'm experiencing the same issue with the gap between the Rubex thrust washer and the prop. If I use the stock VP thrust washer, there is not enough room to use the Rubex spacer. How did you sort your issue out, please? Thanks!

So, even though Solas says the Rubex 105 hub kit and Rubex HR4 (9553-141-19) fits the 1994+ Volvo Penta SX outdrive....it will not fit? Already spent $330 or so on the prop and hub kit, so I'm hoping there is a way to make it work without buying a whole new setup. I sent Solas an email, so hopefully they will be able to assist.

Remove the old thrust washer.

Use the Solas thrust washer with the Solas propeller.

Grease the prop shaft so things don't get stuck on there this time.

Thanks, Jestor. The problem as I see it, is that the Solas thrust washer and the Rubex hub have about a 1/2 inch gap when installed without tightening. I am assuming that this gap will not close by tightening the nut down -- it seems to be stopping as the shaft taper increases. Please see pics.20130627_135742.jpg20130627_135854.jpg

When you tighten the prop nut to 55-60 lb ft, it will pull everything down and fit properly.

The initial tightening is where the hub is compressed tightly inside the prop hub. Before tightening(the first time) everything is loose.

The Solas web site has learning videos that show how to install a Rubex prop.

The Solas Rubex 19" prop(aluminum) listed for a Volvo SX is 9511-145-19 with hub 105.

It would appear that you have the wrong prop.

Thank Tail Gunner for spotting that. :)

I did what you said, Jester, but the thrust washer still has a significant gap between it and the prop hub. This doesn't seem normal to me. It seems like the prop should be tightened against the thrust washer?

Guys - thank you so much for all your ideas. I have the RBX 105 kit, which includes the spacer. I used the spacer to tighten the prop. The only thing left I can think of is using a combination of the old thrust washer and the new one; or just use the original thrust washer. I think the spines keep the hub from sliding down the shaft further.

OK; we've settled on what prop you have. That is the correct number for an SX drive.

With the(single) thrust washer in place, and the #105 hub inserted into the prop body; slide the prop onto the prop shaft. It will not fit all the down until you put on the outer washer(splinned spacer) and torque it down to the specified torque. At that time you are compressing the hub further up into the prop body, and it should push the prop all the way against the thrust washer.

Did you remove the old thrust washer? All the hardware needed should have come in the #105 hub set, including the outer splinned spacer.

Re: SX Drive Prop replacement issues pics inside

I removed the old thrust washer, and did exactly as you said, using the new splined spacer, new thrust washer, and torquing the nut down. This did not close the gap between the thrust washer and the hub/prop. Now, the rubex hub is stuck on the shaft. I will have to use a puller set to get it off -- it is really locked on. I'm at a loss for ideas here, but at least I have confirmed that the thrust washer should be tight against the hub/prop.

Re: SX Drive Prop replacement issues pics inside

My final thought is that the wrong hub set was put into the box(sh*t happens).

You might try returning the hub set(complete) for another # 105 hub set.

Since the same prop(body) number is used on the Volvo, Mercruiser, and OMC Cobra; the only difference is the hub kit.
