Can I refill my 2002 SX outdrive with new oil from the top of the unit in the hole where the dip stick goes and fill until it reaches the level of the mid unit vent screw hole. I`ve been told yes and no. Seems logical that it would work, obviously checking the final level with the dip stick.

Not how the job is done, it might work as long as you don't mind spending the next week trying to get the drive full.
Here is from an owners manual.

What Don said but didn't. It is called air pocket, trapped air, bubble, etc etc. If you fill from the bottom up, it will force all the air out of the drive at the top and you will insure that you have oil and not air in your out drive. They sell the kits pretty cheap that screw on a QT bottle and pump it into the outdrive. Takes a little time but at least you know it is done right.

I think Don stayed up too late last night. He normally is not so caustic with his answers.

By the fact that the manual says you can fill through the oil level plug tells me that it is possible this way. It may not be preferred, but possible in an emergency. I will use the lower drain hole with a pump just to be sure. Thanks guys.

Filling through the oil level plug is a lot different than filling through the dipstick as you was asking in your original post. They (Volvo) doesn't say it, but you don't pump it in the oil level plug, you use a little funnel and pour it in.. Was common on the earlier drives to use that plug, but that hole was then 3/4", not 3/8 as it is now.
