Looking to purchase a 1995 Sylvan 23' Space Deck/Ship w/trailer? Saw boat on C/L, and was wondering if she was worth the 2.5 hour drive to take a look. I like the boat because it looks like a toon with a composite or aluminum hull? A couple websites indicated she's rated for a 135 hp motor, but currently there is a 150 hp Merc (Bad oil pump, hole in piston). My questions; How much horsepower can I add legally, (no overpowering) ? The owner suggest she just needs a "good cleaning". What problems should I anticipate going in with a 16 year old boat of this type? Will I need to replace the engine? Is she worth $1500. Looking for a winter project, but I don't want a money pit. Thanks for any informationSylvan 4.jpgSylvan 2.jpgSylvan 3.jpgSylvan 1.jpg

Not worth $1,500. Add another $500 to that number and you can have something lake ready.

This boat is 17 years old, sittin' in the weeds and has a blown motor - the value of it as it sits is more like $500 or so (interior looks okay in the pictures). Can't tell if it's banged up on the port bow rails or if that's just the photo. And you know all that without seeing what kind of shape the deck is in. I think I'd move on to something else - especially at 2 hours away.

Where are you located?

Re: Sylvan Deckboats

I think its a glass hull boat. The stern deck looks pretty dirty, and may be rotten in areas. I wouldnt drive that far, but then again thats because theres plenty of boats around here. The motor is only worth what ever parts are good yet, maybe the lower unit. If the stringers, and floor is good, along with the rest of the boat, it may be worth less the $1000. A used good 100HP+ motor around here will cost at least $1000. I woundnt be a player, unless I could get it for $500 or less, and then everything else has to be good. I hate it when I see good boats that were so neglected.

Re: Sylvan Deckboats

Thanks guys, I think Ill pass on this one. Last thing, looking to get rid of a 17' 1987 Four Winns Horizon w/ 205HP, and 24' Riviera Cruiser Toon w/ 25 hp Merc , and would like to get into one water craft (deck type boat) powerful enough to pull skiers/tubers, large enough to cruise w 6-8 people aboard and easy enough for dad (80 years old) to board. I was thinking an outboard, just because I'm tired of bellows repairs. My boats have been taken care of at the local marina and think I could get 4k for both, maybe more. Any suggestions at this price point ($6,500) tops? In my next life I'm gonna have more money, then I would by one of those tritoons with the big outboard.

Do a little lookin' on Craigslist for similar boats to see what prices are looking like. You'll do better waiting until spring - prices will go up then when boating season starts crankin' up.
