Symptoms of a sticky lifter

I'm pretty handy mechanically, but I've not jumped into an engine overhaul or the innards of an engine yet so pardon my ignorance on the subject. Last week when we were out in the boat I started getting some very minor hesitations at high RPM (around 4k). I had this problem before & attributed it to fuel delivery (anti-siphon valve specifically) which was fixed. The hesitations were very sporadic and the frequency was pretty low.

When I came down off high RPM & opened the engine compartment, I heard a very faint tapping sound. I've heard it before when I first start the engine, but it tends to go away pretty quickly once the engine is going. I'm wondering if I have a sticky lifter & I'm wondering if that could be the cause of the intermittent hesitations? It's a 1980 OMC 140 (4cyl), so even 1 cylinder not operating at full efficiency would seem to me to be pretty noticeable. What do you guys think?

Are there some easy tests to determine if I have valve issues & if I do, how easy is that to fix? Is fixing lifters something that requires disassembling the engine or just pulling off the valve cover? I did pull the cover and did a visual inspection with the engine off, but didn't see anything suspicious. Last time I checked the plugs, they were all in good shape & no noticeable difference in wear/color across them (though, I'll check them again since having this issue).

Re: Symptoms of a sticky lifter

As you cannot replace lifters without replacing the cam I wouldn't worry about it. Quite common for them to bleed down a bit after a high speed run. Does not indicate a problem.
