hey guys ... I just got something right out of the horse's mouth ... (Amsoil dealer)

In oposite to petroleum based oil (2 cycle) that can be kept forever ... upon a visit at my Merc mecanic friend's shop to promote Amsoil synthetic oil the guy saw a bottle of 100:1 2 cycle oil on the shelf that was 10 years old ... he advised to discart it based on the fact that synthetic oil (all brands) have a shelf life and that was expired.

To my knowledge there are no expiration date on any synthetic oil containers ... so what would be a reasonable shelf life then ???

Amsoil did have some separation problems in the past, and they have changed there fomulas for the better now, so I would pass on that bottle and either get the air cooled or the water cooled oil for your application. I wouldn`t have a problem using the old oil though, just shake it up good.

I cant resist8)8).....As it pertains to a Amsoil dealer and a horse the info probably come from the end opposite the mouth,lol..
I wouldnt use any oil that had been opened for a long time. Especially a ester based oil like Amsoil. Ester bases can be hygroscopic. Its for this reason that many times ester oils expiereance corrosion issues and are poor for long term storage.

lubedude: actualy I was not present listening to the conversation so perhaps the shelf life applied to that particular 10 years old bottle (unopened)

Do I understand Amsoil has solved this problem ?

Not knocking on Amsoil ... I use their product in the form of Injector HPI in premix application.

BWalker: this applied to an old unopened bottle.

It never hurts to shake up a oil bottle before you pour.
I have noticed speration issues witha variety of oils.
Next time you pour out a quart of motr oil form a white colored container look in the bottom. I think you will be supprised.
