Question: What would you recommend: Using Mercury Marine Opti-Max 2-cycle oil at 34.99 gallon OR Pennzoil TC-W3 100% Synthetic Oil at 34.99 gallon?

Which is better to use for the same money. I have a 88HP Johnson outboard.

Re: Synthetic Oil

My personal choice is Pennzoil. Good quality at a good price. K-Mart has it currently at 23.95 a gal.(on sale) in Northern California Stores. I run it in a 1987 90 hp crossflow Johnson.

Optimax oil is made for direct injection motors. You need to see if it is suitable for your motor.

I would use semi synthetic or dino oil, for that motor.

Pennzoil semi-synthetic would be just fine for your motor. Academy Sports has it at $17.99 a gallon. Not sure if you have Academy in your area, but you should be able to find similar prices elsewhere.

Re: Synthetic Oil

$34.99 for Pennzoil Synthetic is highway robbery. Shop for it anywhere but a marine dealer or marina. Your motor does not need "hi-tech" oils anyway. It will live nicely on any TCW3 branded oil.

Re: Synthetic Oil

I heard from a Mercury Dealer of all people that the Evinrude XD50 is the best 2 cycle oil on the market today.

I think I'm going to go buy hat stuff. It a synthetic blend.

Its XD50 for me!!!!!!!!!!
