I just finished my 20 hr break-in on my Merc 350 Reman. Used Pennsoil 10-30 at 10 hr oil change. I run Mobile 1 in all my other vehicles. Whats the experts' opinion on Synthetic in marine engines? The only thing different with this motor is it has Roller Tappets.

Re: Synthetic or Not

Rock Hall, You do realize that standard Multi-Vis oils such as your 10W-30 are not recommended.

On a related note, I had heard that the Quicksilver 25-40 Oil is formulated in a different manner than the automotive Multi-vis oils. I had heard that it was actually a blend of both 25 and 40 weight oil, rather than an base stock with additives to provide the multi-viscosity behavior.

On a further related note. Why is Mobil 1 OK to use in a Sterndrive engine? Isn't is just a synthetic version of the automotive multi-vis oils? I notice that Mercruiser doesn't recommend it.

Quicksilver 25-40 is not synthetic but you are correct that it is different than most auto multi-vis oils in that it does not use viscosity increasing products. Neither does Mobil 1 synthetic.

Mobil 1 does not come in 25W-40 but does come in 15W-50.

Fresh oil lubricates, keep it clean and fresh and it will do it's job. If it makes you feel good buy the brand you like. Most auto makers are going to synthetic blend, best of both worlds. Dirty oil doesn't lubricate well, don't change it and brands don't matter much.
