Last year, I bought a new boat after retiring. Not exactly new, 85 Lund Fibreglas/140 Evinrude. Was not familiar with boat/motors whatsoever last year but have now learned a few bit about them. Would like advice on following. I am deaf and could not hear bells and whistles etc on the warning system on the motor. Went out over the winter and bought a new system check for the boat, oil tank pickup, vro, wiring harness and new tach etc. Feeling confident to now do the changeover, I laid out all the parts to put on the boat last night and notice that the tach (# 0177103 new in box pointer is pointing over toward the 7 grand mark(just above W in low oil light area)and not zero mark. As I live up in the north, I don't want to get everything installed to find out that the tach doesn't work. Can I test the tach before I install or is where the needle sitting normal. I can wait and ship it back and get a new one within a week. Thanks for any help you can give me.
