Last year, I bought a new boat after retiring. Not exactly new, 85 Lund Fibreglas/140 Evinrude. Was not familiar with boat/motors whatsoever last year but have now learned a few bit about them. Would like advice on following. I am deaf and could not hear bells and whistles etc on the warning system on the motor. Went out over the winter and bought a new system check for the boat, oil tank pickup, vro, wiring harness and new tach etc. Feeling confident to now do the changeover, I laid out all the parts to put on the boat last night and notice that the tach (# 0177103 new in box pointer is pointing over toward the 7 grand mark(just above W in low oil light area)and not zero mark. As I live up in the north, I don't want to get everything installed to find out that the tach doesn't work. Can I test the tach before I install or is where the needle sitting normal. I can wait and ship it back and get a new one within a week. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Re: System check

Most tachs have an electrically balanced needle. That means that when the key is turned on, it will go to zero.

If your motor is also a 1985 or any engine before 1996, you may have the wrong tachometer there. They should not have a NO OIL and other lites on it. Check with your dealer to double check the part number for your application.

Re: System check

Thanks for the information on the tach Commander. Pls see my post of May 24 7:31PM. I think I finally have it. I am changing the entire system from a 0 wire VRO to a basic 3 wire harness and then adding a new harness which I have just ordered #174710 which adds the 4th function wire which adds No Oil read to the system. The tach is supposed to work with this. This changeover also includes a new modular wiring system oil pick up kit.
