Well i got this new laptop,HP 6000 series with Vista Home premium.

I was having a few minor issues so thought i would do a system restore.
I have a couple manual restore points and some that were created automaticaly.
None of them work.It starts the restore process then comes back and says an unknown error happened during the restore and could not complete.
Any Ideas how to find the problem?

Re: system restore.

Maybe it was corrupt when it created the restore point, so they won't work. Have you tried chkdsk to fix the original problems? Or were they just program problems?

I have had vista business at work for over a month now but have not had to try a restore yet. Guess I will try it tomorrow to see what happens.

Thanks Plainsman.I tried about 6 different restore points.A couple i created manually. When i created them it said it was succesful.
Do you do chkdsk just from a command prompt?
I was having IE browser problems so i thought a quick restore would fix it. Now i'm more concerned that restore doesn't work..

Re: system restore.

I've never had much luck with system restore on XP. Sure, it's saved me a time or two, but usually fails like you say. For Vista I couldn't really say yet.

Looks like a no go with Vista for sure.I hate to dump my ghost image back on and start all over again..sets it back to factory and has all that crap to uninstall.
I got my browser problem resolved. But the restore not working really sucks!

To elevate your privliges, go to Control Panel, user accounts, Turn user account control on/off and turn it off.
That will give you admin rights, even though your already an admin, go figure.

Ok,That worked and check disk found no errors or bad sectors.
Wonder what could cause system restore to not work?
It show restore points that have been created...

Re: system restore.

Youz' guys should have a look at free program called Erunt..google it....read the FAQ's too...

It would be a good idea to have a copy of Hirens CD too. You can boot to a "DOS" prompt, cd to the Erunt folder and restore your registry from any previously created backups by date.

I found out that XP restore points aren't worth squat ( incomplete hive backups) and seldom result in good restores.

Erunt works with Vista too.....

Yup, Hirens, don't leave home without it....It's like any other util cd, in the wrong hands it can do more harm than good.

As for Erunt, what a life saver, it really does the job. Learning a few simple DOS commands are all that's necessary to restore to a previously saved state. The companion program, Ntregopt is good too. I usually run the Registry optimizer then the erunt to back things up.
