System Tray XP

I have a computer with XP home edition with SP2. Kid downloaded a anti virus program that even after I deleted it still gives me a virus warning in the system tray and even if I right click this warning it launches an IE window for me to buy the program. How do I get rid of this warning in the system tray. I did add and delete programs and deleted it and also got rid of what was left of it after that by going into windows explorer and deleting the stuff that add delete did not remove. My computers are currently being protected by Mccaffes which I receive for free because I have comcast.

Try a system restore Ralph and see if that get's rid of it.

I would do a ctrl-alt-delete and see what program is running. It will probably be a .exe program.
Then do a search for it and find the folder it is in. It's sometimes best to use the programs uninstall program, rather than windows.
You can also scan through your programs folder and find it that way. It made an extra file somewhere, where the uninstall didn't touch it.
You may need to run a registry cleaner to get all of it out.

Yea Ralph, sometimes that will work and sometimes not. Just watch it to see if it reappears.

Good advice SBN.

This virus program is a way of getting your credit card information. Once you get the popup, it says to install a virus scan program and directs you to a site to download it.

Once installed, you keep getting a warning that you have a virus and that you should buy their virus removal software. Obviously they take credit cards.

a system restore soon after the install sometimes helps. Other times, your spyware scanner will see it and be able to remove it.​
