T & T Fluid?

The T&T on my '84 90hp Johnny stopped trimming up, or out. Using the two lower pistons for the first 15 degrees it lifts fine, once it gets to the single piston, is stops, figured it was low on fluid. Bought some Pennzoil Marine Power T&T fluid, it has a normal golden oil color. While toping off, the old fluid begins to overflow and its dark red. Did I use the wrong fluid.

And my trim is not working any better! cycled it through 3 times, maybe it need to by cycled more?

Thanks

No! The color does'nt matter. Johnson 50-1 engine oil was red, Evinrude blue. We had one customer who would not run the blue oil in his Johnson engine.

auto transmission is often used as a replacement for tnt fluid,i dont know what the viscosity differance is,but i use transmission fluid, likely what was in there before, dont be concerned with the different fluids or color

Low on fluid would indicate a leak, it's a sealed system, you need to find out where it's leaking.

OMC used Dextron ATF. Mercury used 20W motor oil.

Re: T & T Fluid?

thanks everyone!

not sure if it was low, the hole is to small to really tell, i just squirted some new oil in till it overflowed, almost immediately, and was red. I have not seen any leaking externally at all, and i look the whole boat over extensively before and after i put it in the water, which has been every weekend for the last 2 months.

Any other reason why the 2 lower pistons work fine, but the single piston, of course responsible for 75% of the travel, wouldn't work. It won't tilt out, or up, at all from being fully down, or in, when running at a decent speed.

thanks all!

if fluid isnt the answer ,then you probably have an internal problem with unit, like dirt in passages.or check valve, you might need to pull apart, have you checked the manual relief screw on the side,it should be tite, also know this screw will not remove unless you remove the retaining clip
