This is a '78 outdrive, Model 260 (5.7L). Did a waterpump job. While trying to remate the 2 halves on the boat, what looked like part of the upper drive shaft oil seal came out, and so am replacing it. (Now have both halves of OD at home). Got a new seal and am prepping to reassemble the 2 halves. Went to put new seal, and looking up into the Upper from the bottom I found what looks like one side of a stainless bearing race -- or maybe a splash? -- where I thought this new seal would be going. (Or might it be the remnants of the old seal??) OD of this race/splash/seal remnant is same as the new seal (~ 1 5/16" OD). Replacement seal is pehnolic/rubber/spring/black: so I wanted to check with you folk before doing something stupid! What say you all: Is the stainless piece part of an old-syle seal in there?? If so, what method recommended to get it out? (I don't have a hub puller that small!) Seloc manual almost ignores the seal, etc. Thank you!!!
