The clymer manual specifically calls for ( on page 83) a test sequence that requires the use of a T8953 CD tester and a T8996 ignition tester (which includes a No. 22 trigger pulse detector load coil and MM-1 clip) and plug adapter T11237.

Boats.net has these items as OBSELETE. Does anyone know what the replacement testing units would be?

you might be looking for a PRV (Peak Reading Voltmeter). Not sure without looking at a manual, but you need one for testing certain ignition components. My manual says that a normal DVOM will not work, unless it has a setting for Peak Voltage Reading.

Well I am using a uei dm383B multimeter that will display max reading.. But I suspect this is not the same thing.. Any body want to chime in? Should I get the DVM as described in the manual for 1984-1996 models or buy the Chrysler one noted above?

Re: T8953 CD Tester, T8996 Ignition tester

I currently have a UEI Digital Multimeter model DM383B. http://www.ueitest.com/product-dm383b.html One of the great features is the MAX setting that will hold on display the max voltage during the test. My question is does this perform the same as a peak reading Multimeter or a DVA peak reading multimeter? If not can someone please explain the diffrence. Also I found an "adapter" that is supposed to turn any standard multimeter into a peak reading. http://www.maxrules.com/fixtools640.html
Would this matter on my multimeter as it already has the MAX function?

The max reading function would probably work but you would not get the same readings as stated in the trouble-shooting guides.

Here's a link that might be of value. Explains how to make one and what it's purpose is.

my understanding is it is used to test just the CD box... make a post with your specific ignition problem and you probably can get away testing other components and ruling out the CD box.
