Tach and Charging Still Not Fixed

Tach does not work. Nor does a replacement tach. Replaced rectifier with another (albeit a used) rectifier off ebay...still no good. Is it possible the charging coils on the stator are faulty? Should I buy a brand new rectifier and assume the used one was bad? How do I check if I am charging properly with a DVM and what's at fault if this test fails? Stator or Rectifier? Engine runs fine.
The problem has plagued me since last year. I need to change my prop but need a tach reading to do it. I also think I am cooking my battery. Please help.

Take the gray wire from the main harness at the engine end and disconnect it from the rectifier connection. Then reconnect it on your terminal block to the post that connects to the yellow and gray wire from the alternator. See if the tach works that way.

Take a voltage reading on the actual battery terminals with the engine off. Take another reading with the engine running. If you have a higher reading the charger is working - may not be perfect, but it is charging.

BTW, A lot of electrical symptoms improve or disappear with a good cleanup of all of the engine wiring connections - especially the ground wires.

Thanks folks

Ezeke
-asssuming the above wire jumping works....that further assumes a bad rectifier?

- If I get no charging with the voltage reading when running that indicates a bad stator?

- also can a bad stator lead to the tach not working?

Thanks for your help

We want to try to eliminate or confirm the rectifier as the problem or part of the problem, Wiring the gray pulse wire directly to the gray and yellow alternator wire helps to do that. You can also test the tach itself following the Teleflex checklist:

Make sure that the connections at the tach, control, and engine are clean and tight, especially the ground wires.
