Tach Issues on 94 Sea Ray 3.0L MercCruiser Alpha I Gen II

The SeaRay Tach is the original tach installed in the boat. When i first start the boat, the tach will read erratically for several minutes. I have checked all connections, removed the wires from the tach, cleaned all connections, reinstalled all wired. Verified the tach is set for 4 cyl and still have issues with the tach. It will read at least 1000 rpm higher than the engine is running and bounce around all over the dial for a while. When it finally starts reacting right, it reads acccurately compared to a hand held tach that i have.

Does anyone have any suggestions where to troubleshoot or what to inspect/test/replace?

You need a new tach. It happens.
