Tach issues

The aftermarket tach [Faria] I purchased not that long ago won't give a reading below 1100 rpm. Meaning tach needle [with motor running] will not register rpms less then 1100 rpm even though the motor is running at a lower rpm. For the most part, the lower the engine rpms are the more erratic the reading the tach gives. The tach needle does go to "0" when the motor is shut off. Any ideas what may be the cause?
