89 merc 260. I wanted to check timing but couldn't figure out where to hook up the tach meter. I have the thunderbolt IV. On my coil I have two purple wires, one of which goes over to the ignition module and two gray wires that just go in to the wiring harness, couldn't really tell where they went. I did get a reading hooked to the purple wires, but it just didn't seem right. It showed low, like 300 RPM while the dash tach showed about 550 RPM. Timing was right on a 8 degrees BTDC so I'm not gonna mess with that. The tach meter is pretty old, so maybe its just not working well. Also, is it correct that there is no Base Timing Mode on the TB IV?
I got all the bellows changed out this saturday. When you all say PITA job, you are not kidding. I couldn't get the shift lever off so I couldn't get the shift shaft out and I couldn't get the bellows expansion tool in to pull the exhaust bellow on. I wound up taking the tool apart, putting in one side at a time past the shift shaft and then putting the tool back together. That seemed to work ok. I know there must be a better way to do that though.
