Howdy all,,,,I have a problem with my Tachometer now, I was out in the boat the battery went dead. I replaced battery and now my tach will not work right. I have Faria Coral Tach http://www.shipstore.com/SS/HTML/FAR/FAR33050.html link is exact model. Everything on it works expect the tach. WIth no power the tack dial is dead 6 O'clock when i switch it goes to 7000 RPM mark and stays there. The motor is Johnson SPL 115HP Model#-J115TSLECM 4/1998 i have checked for a lose connection and fused all seem good,,,well the ones i know about anyway. Still looking for a diagram on it....Any help will be great.:)

Re: Tach Problem

Why did your battery die? Have you figured that out? Did you jump the battery at all, possibly cross polarizing the battery when doing so? Terminals corroded or loose at all?

Bottom line is, check out your rectifier as per your manual, or check out the FAQ on this forum for a thread by Joe Reeves pertaining to this.

Re: Tach Problem

Do you have a multimeter, or access to one?

As I said, check out the FAQ, Joe will guide you through the rectifier test.

Good luck

Well,,,sure enough i had a bad rectifier. I replaced it and still same thing. Back to the drawing board. Tach when power is applied goes from 6 o'clock to 6500 RMP mark counter clockwise. Heck if i know!!!@?@?@?@?

Re: Tach Problem

Did you install the tach? If so, how? What is the rotary switch on the back of the tach set to?

Re: Tach Problem

Im not sure what to tell ya, sorry. Others will jump in, so be patient. If it were me, I would probably start by pulling my dash off to inspect the wiring feeding the gauges. The tach does not move as you trim/tilt the motor does it?

Re: Tach Problem

Check to make sure the dial on the back of the tach is set to the right pulse reading. If you don't know ... call a dealer. I had the same thing happen to mine, and come to find out ... it was my buddy who switched it around while he was messing around trying to figure it out. It was a big "OH YEAH ... " when I mentioned it AFTER THE FACT. I spent close to 2 days trying to figure it out, until I made absolutely sure the pulse setting was correct on the back of the tach.

Then again ... it is a possibility that the rectifier overloaded the circuit and fried the tach. Stranger things have happened. Ask me! (A Skeeter Owner) :p

Ill check it Lucky. I don't know how easy the setting is to change Ive never taken the tach out of the socket nor has anyone else. But doesn't hurt to check it anyway. Its funny with the system check tach that i have everything else works on it. Very Strange@!@! Seems to me it would have fried everything if it had an extreme overload. Just looking at it appears that the tilt meter, fuel gauge, and tach is all in series with each other with same power.

Re: Tach Problem

How did they determine that the tach was fried? Mines doing the exact same thing now!

I had put a new rectifier on it and that didnt solve the problem. So a bud done a total check on the system. Rectifier is good, stator is good and charging correctly, battery is good, wiring is all in good. So tach is only thing left.:) I think..
