tach problem

I have the 70 hp Johnson 1990 year, the tach is stuck at 6500 rpm but backs down to 6000 when power is applied to the key, Is this thing baked?<br />or can it be repaired for under 150.00[cost of new one]

Disconnect the wire from the "S" terminal on the back of the instrument. I think it'll be a gray wire. If the gauge stays at 6-6500 rpm with the engine idling, the gauge has gone south. If it falls to idle speed (approx. 1000rpm) ya got something else wrong.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty
