Tach problems

When I'm cruising my tach neddle jumps around. from 3,000 to 4,000 rpms. the speed o stays at around 15mph. I checked with a hand held gps and they both are very close to each other. If I tap on the glass it will drop to around 3200 rpms. Any Idea what's going on.?

Probably a bad connection to the selector switch inside. Mine had that issue till I got behind it and worked the switch back and forth. Make sure to note the setting it's on first.
