Without knowing what tach you have, the best I can do for ya is to tell you to put it in the 6P position. If you were on switch #6 (which is usually the highest pulse setting) you should not be maxing the tach out. You should be reading lower rpm's than actual. Regardless of the amount of cylinders, your tach is counting magnetic pulses from the stator, in your case, 6 pulses per one engine revolution.
