Check my post Tach All Over The Place. Mine was jumping all over and reading high instead of low like yours. I find if I tap on the glass pretty hard it resets and works fine. It is brand new and replaced my last failed tach. It's needle was moving around all over the dial like a clock right before it fell off. Mine is a Teleflex Morse brand and it is set on 6 pole with a 3cyl. 60HP. It goes by the alternator poles according to the instructions just like Stinky said. You probably just got a junk one like I did. Maybe condensation is affecting the electronics because it didn't look well sealed on the back to me.
