The motor is a 87 Yamaha 50hp pro G. The tachometer is zero when the motor is off and when you turn the key and start the motor the tachometer pegs to the right. The motor is running fine though. It isn't revving up with the tachometer. The tachometer is just 0 or pegged to the right. What do you think is causing this? Thanks.

So I cleaned connections and it still did the same thing. They were glazed for sure though. I then unplugged tach and started up. Also unplugged while running. Not sure which one fixed it, but it started working again and has been for a couple trips.

Well when you unplugged the connection and plugged them in again, you actually help clean the contact in those two connector parts. You could also use the electrical cleaner on them as well... So you had corrosion and didn't actually know it. Corrosion with connectors doesn't have to be white powdery stuff or green crud either. It can be normal oxidation of the metal and look innocent. So remember that for future issues because you will have them...
