i just got a new teleflex tach for my 83 50hp evinrude. i cant get the tach to do a thing, wont zero, nothing! (the old tach does work, i just suspect it is a little off.)
there are 3 connection points on the back of the new tach (the old one had two), one is ign, one is snd, the other is gnd. the instructions say to connect the gray wire from the throttle box to the send contact, and the ground to the ground contact. trouble shooting says to meter 3-7 vac at 2000rpm between the ground & the send. i did that and it reads 6vac, so i'm getting signal!
the switch setting says it should be on 5p, and it is!
does anyone have experience with these tachs? i must be doing something wrong.

Re: tach question

thanks jim! those directions are exactly the same as mine that came with the tach, exept for the wiring diagram. on the link, the diagram (fig 3) says the signal wire from the throttle box goes to the ignition contact.i'll look at it tomorrow when there's daylight. thanks again! :)

Re: tach question

Your engine has a 12 pole alternator. Set the selecter switch on 6. Sounds like everything else iz ok.

c/6
Hooty

Re: tach question

You should have power to the IGN term. when the key is on, which will in turn, zero the tach-purple wire, I believe. If you have no power to that term., you have no tach. Voltage when the key is on, tach will zero....the grey wire to send gets it's signal from the stator with engine running, and yes, I believe your's is a 12 pole so it should be on 6P.

Tach Terminals:

Ign = 12 volts but only when ign key in ON.

Snd = Gray wire leading from engine instrument cable.

Grd = Ground

Re: tach question

wow, thanks for all the replies. i'm going to try to figure it out tomorrow.
i am a little confused about a couple of things; joe reeves says 12v to the ign terminal, so this would be 12vdc from the ignition switch start circuit (12v batt power) to the ign terminal on the tach?
sorry about all the confusion but the directions for the tach say nothing about this, all it says is two wires. ground & send! and the directions also say to set the switch position to 5p for a two cyl two stroke.

hey kenny, whats this "will fish for hire" stuff all about? :D

Re: tach question

El correcto. That's 12vdc from the ignition switch to the "I" or "IGN" terminal on the back of the tach, a ground wire to the "GRD" terminal and the tach wire on "SEND". I think you probably misread the instructions for the selector switch. It must be set on the "6".

g'luck & c/6
Hooty
