Tach Quit Working

On a recent fishing trip the tach for my 1995 88HP Johnson outboard quit working while underway. I have checked all connections and they appear OK. It was suggested to me that it might be the rectifier. Does this seem reasonable? Could it be something else? How do I trouble shoot this? The motor seems to run fine otherwise. What does the rectifier do? Will it harm the boat to use it until I get this fixed?

Re: Tach Quit Working

It most likely is the rectifier (small round device on upper starboard side of block with 3 wires). If it did go bad then most likely your battery isnt being charged either. Your service manual will show in detail how to check it. Its real simple.

Good luck!
