tach trouble ??

what causes a tach to ride up with nothing running, the needle, after a while after shutting down, will eventually indicate around 1500 rpm with nothing running, when the key is turned on the reading will go back to "0" why??? have i done something wrong??

An OMC tach will stay at the reading the engine was shut off at. When the key is switched on, it will return to zero until the engine is restarted. Do I understand correctly, Your's is climbing up with the engine shut off?

Even brand new right out of the box, a lot of OMC and Teleflex tachs will show a reading somewhat above zero when it is not running. It should go to the proper reading when you start the motor.
