Re: tach wire on v-6 200 hp engine merc outboard

My OEM manual is for a 1989 135-200 hp Merc. The purple wire come come from the engine in the wiring harness and hooks up the Tach on the BATT terminal and then using pruple jumps power to the other instuments. As near as I can tell, the Purple wires starts at the LUBEALERT box and goes to a terminal block and then into the wiring harness. Manual shows it as the #2 pin on the harness on the 16AMP stator. Also same for the 40 AMP regulator system. The other wire is grey and it goes to the other post, then the ground on the upper right side.
Hope this makes some sense for you.

its already hooked up on cluster but where wiring harness comes out to engine i cant find when the purple wire( which is the tack wire)hooks on the engine itself to send the power to the tack

thats parts hooked up try to find where the comes out of the wiring harness at the powerhead where does it go none of these diagrams show that.i know this is tach wire because when i put ire to it my tach moves at cluster.got to hook somewhere on engine head at wiring terminals to read the rpm where cant be found so far.

If it is hooked up properly at the dash, then the purle wires comes off the engine, w/purple wire from the 40/20 amp regulator, to a bullet connection, there should be a split, one side goes to a terminal block, then to the lubalert, the other goes to the wiring harness assy/pin cluster that is usually tucked away on the lowerstarboard side of the engine where it plugs into the boat side of the harness. Not much more to it.
Where do you have a loose wire and what color is it?

under the dash is fine all connections good ------the wire is purple--- comes out the wiring harness at engine after it connects to the harness coming from the controll.its all by itself no splits or anything---one wire its diffently the tack ---put fire to it tach moves and wire going to tach is purple too .got the right wire just need to find out where it hooks on engine connection so my tach will work.just hanging on side of engine where all connections ars coming out of engine side harness.

There are 7-9-10 & 12 wire harnesses with and without horns, in all cases the purple wire is energized at the switch and in some cases returns to the engine fo power certain things but it never powers anything from the engine. If you can tell me which harness you have I will post it so you will belive me.

oh i believe you its just mine has 14 wires----here how it goes ----hooking it up to the bullet connector--counting all wires coming out of harness going to the inner and outer modules and all other wires--theres 14.the purple one works the tack maybe different color on some charts i dont know.but its the only one loose and it works the tach when i apply power to it.i just cant find where it goes maybe it doesnt hook up but my tach isnt working and logical explanatin when the wire jummps the tack when power is applied.

Purple is the power wire for the tach and the oil module and any other assessories that must on work only when the ign. switch is on. With a 14 pin connecter you must have a fairly new engine or control. I don't have the serial number or know if its carbureted of EFI those items help a lot, I am guessing that it is a 16 amp system, all these things require a differant wiring diagram but the purple wire always is powered from the ign. switch.

Re: tach wire on v-6 200 hp engine merc outboard

thats explains it -----according to serial # its a 88 model but this this has been totally redone by a drag racing expect out of florida clocked at mid 80's to low 90's according to prop you put on,it is carburated ----oil mixing has been taken off.the control looks not that new but has the trailing switch on it and throttle control at bottom it is listed in merc manual ive found it.everything is hooked up right.anywhere i can look to find diagram i need that you know of.looked on alot of sites just havent found the 14 pin one.help anyone-by the way thanks for your help.
